For a long time the coordination looked almost supernatural. The breakthrough came from the STARFLAG project, an interdisciplinary study that reconstructed the three-dimensional positions of individual birds inside real flocks over Rome using stereo photography.
Their central finding, published by Ballerini and colleagues in PNAS (2008), was that each starling coordinates not with every bird within a fixed distance, but with a fixed number of neighbors: on average about six to seven of its nearest flockmates. This is called a topological interaction, as opposed to a metric one.
The distinction matters. If a bird paid attention to everything within, say, ten meters, then whenever the flock spread out it would lose contact with its neighbors and the formation would fall apart. By instead tracking a set number of nearest neighbors regardless of how close or far they are, each starling stays connected even as the flock stretches and compresses. That is exactly what keeps the murmuration cohesive when a predator strikes and the density suddenly changes.

The three rules behind the pattern
Long before anyone measured a real flock, computer scientist Craig Reynolds showed that lifelike flocking could arise from just three local steering rules. His 1987 model, Flocks, Herds, and Schools: A Distributed Behavioral Model, introduced simulated birds he called “boids,” each obeying:
- Separation — steer to avoid crowding your nearest flockmates.
- Alignment — steer toward the average heading of your nearest flockmates.
- Cohesion — steer toward the average position of your nearest flockmates.
No boid can see the whole flock, and none of them is in charge. Yet run those three rules across hundreds of agents and a convincing, fluid flock appears on screen. Reynolds’ boids became a landmark in computer animation and a textbook illustration of how complex group behavior can emerge from simple, local rules. Why the birds bother
If murmurations were only about getting to bed, the birds could simply fly to their roost. Instead they perform, sometimes for half an hour, in the fading light. Researchers point to several overlapping benefits.
The RSPB explains that gathering at dusk gives starlings “safety in numbers, warmth and the opportunity to share information about the best feeding grounds.” A dense, swirling mass is genuinely hard for a predator such as a peregrine falcon to attack, because it is difficult to lock onto any single target inside the churn.
A large citizen-science study, Goodenough and colleagues in PLOS ONE (2017), analyzed more than 3,000 murmurations reported by the public and found the patterns fit an anti-predator “safer together” explanation better than the idea that the birds gather mainly for warmth. Even so, scientists are honest that not every detail is settled, and part of the display’s appeal is that it still holds a little mystery.
